After a nice evening in Gouda we went back to our hotel and planned our trip to Kinderdijk. This area of the Netherlands has the largest concentration of windmills (some still operational).

Helen & I decided to take a train from Assen to Utrecht as cycling time has become a scarce commodity. Whomever said that the Netherlands is small country forgot about the over 11,000 kilometers of bike routes that crisscross this beautiful country.

The wonderful thing about cycling is that you meet some wonderful people. I think the global gene pool was generous when it created the “cyclist gene”.

We have arrived in cycling’s Nirvana (another one)! Groningen is reputed to be the Netherlands’s most cycle friendly city. With 45,000 University students, there is clearly a reason to ride a bike (poverty).

One of the reasons we came to Leeuwarden is that Helen wanted to visit some of the towns & villages where her family is from. Today saw us taking a trip into the Friesen countryside to find the village where her Grandparents (Beppe & Paka) made their home. Vrouwenparochie...

I have to admit that we were pooped by the time we arrived in Vlieland. Our cycling on this island was short lived (arrival point near village). Then a search for a suitable hotel (Criteria: bed, shower & adjoining pub).

Departing Hoorn, we headed west towards Alkmaar. Helen had convinced me to take a less direct route up to Den Helder where we would take the ferry to the Island of Texel.

The good part about being behind on one’s posts as that you already know what is going to happen! I finally got some good Internet access and will try and capitalize on my good fortune.
