Prince Edward County – Cycling in and Around Picton Ontario

This past weekend Helen & I had the absolute pleasure of spending our weekend in Prince Edward County Ontario. I cannot say enough good things about this area of Ontario. Especially in terms of cycle-friendliness. The roads (on the most part) are quite good. The drivers (with few exceptions) are respectful of cyclists. And the local people make you want to return for another visit.

Where do I start? Our trip was graciously organized by 2 wonderful women from the KNBC (our bike club). Monna & Christine had obviously spent countless hours planning and organizing this trip – with great attention to detail and timing. Thanks ladies!

Friday evening had us meeting at the Barley Room Pub – located at the ‘Waring House Inn’ (approximately 4km west of Picton (on the way to Bloomfield) on Highway 33.). A good time was had by one and all. Note to self. Go back next time you visit the area.

We met at the War Memorial in Picton at 8:45 AM on Saturday morning. 25 cyclists of varying ages and skill level.

So much to see. Check the maps (well done ladies) and we were off  (some faster then others).

I won’t capture all of the high points in this post as Monna & Christine had clearly done their research and ensured that there was not a dull moment throughout the day.

Some pics follow…. Every picture does tell a story!

Lots of riding through rolling hills – nary a car to be seen or heard. Cycling nirvana. Did I say that you gotta go here and cycle?

And all of a sudden it was lunch time. And oh what a wonderful spot they ladies had chosen! Milford is a small town – off the beaten path and most people’s radars. The Milford Bistro was where we ate. And let me tell you, Veronica and her husband put on a great spread of high quality food served at reasonable prices. They even had the class to provide us with a customized menu with “Kanata Nepean Bicycle Club” written in at the top!

And off for more great riding……

The long ride was 100 Kms. and the short was 80.

And to finish things off, here is a small sideshow that helps capture the wonderful day we all had.

    Hi Les
I’m planning a trip to PEC this June with some cycling gals and would appreciate any information on where to stay, eat, play etc. as well as a high-res version of your map.

    Thanks!

    Ann

    • Les says:

Hi Ann – My only recommendation for accommodations is to perhaps not stay in Picton, but rather out in the countryside. There are scads of B&Bs around.

Play? Basically follow the route on the map (which I will send to your personal e-mail account). Sandbanks…. I mentioned a superb restaurant for lunch in my post (you must go!). Wineries…cheese factory, etc… sites.

Not too many cars and the ones you come across are very respectful of cyclists.

  19. Lorna says:

    Hi Les,
There was a list of possible cycling routes on the internet…can’t remember which cycling club posted the list…it’s gone now. Some friends and I are coming up to PEC to do some cycling in the area next weekend and I actually used that list as a link, but never printed the info.

Would you be able to direct me?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

The ride looks lovely! Could you please send me a high quality map? Any other suggestions for rides in the area?

    Kristen

    • Les Faber says:

I sent you the map via e-mail. My only other suggestion is to bring your swim trunks!

You really cannot go wrong when cycling the area. Most roads are pretty good and there really aren’t that many cars. Especially as you get away from Picton.

  22. Pauline says:

    Hi Les,

I would love a copy of your cycling route map. Thanks a lot!
