My Brother-in-Law Doug sent me a link to a Discovery Channel Video that I thought was pretty cool. When you think of it, a bicycle frame made from bamboo makes perfect sense. Bamboo is an extremely light and durable wood. It is easy to work with and widely available. Plus it is 100% natural.
These bikes don’t come cheap. But if you are into this kind of stuff, the concept becomes quite interesting. You can get a variety of bikes from the folks over at Calfee Design. And yes, they are made in California (where else?)!
Here’s a little YouTube video (pardon the commercial nature)
I too had seen various renditions of bamboo bicycles. I agree that it seems odd mixing natural materials (bamboo) with carbon etc… If you look at the pricing of same, you could assume that the maker is (perhaps) looking for a market niche of tree-huggers who want fast bikes.
Bamboo is relatively cheap as compared to carbon fiber. So one would think that you should be able to get a better-priced bicycle.
Regardless, I like the concept as anything to help us “get green” works for me.
This is one of those recurring ideas which goes around and around in cycling. There are many bamboo bikes from years ago in museums around the world.
A carbon fibre wheel seems a bit odd on a bike which is “100% natural”. Racers used to use wooden wheels with tubulars in the old days.

I like the bike… but it is kind of strange
