Helen & I have an annual tradition of visiting New York City with our good friends Karen & Mike. This year is no different. Well, maybe it is? Armed with my trusty Canon SD870, I decided I would add “bike-spotting” into my agenda. How hard could it be to spot cyclists in New York City? It’s one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world.
I must have gone to the wrong areas as I was only able to spot 1 cyclist actually cycling. By the time I got my camera out, he had gone through the red light at 42nd & Broadway.
This fellow was (on the non bike-friendly) path train from Jersey City. There are really no facilities that cater to cyclists as can be seen by the photo below.
I spotted this knockoff Dutch fiets Near Time Square
Note the bogus lock.
The old fashioned braking system (fake) was neat to look at
And my favorite. I’ll call it “Bike as Trash Bin”
Taken on 50th Street.
I’ll admit that I didn’t have much time to seek out the Winter die hard cyclists of New York City.

I was hoping you’d get to walk along those little bike lanes in between avenues they put in this summer…as these ‘islands’ now also provide terraces to cater beer drinking cyclists, but no … :-p
I’m sure you had a good time anyway!
@ amsterdamize: seriously, the cyclists were all hiding!
I just left NYC after showing our new Virtual Ride Cycling DVDs to a couple of the indoor cycling studios and I noticed the same thing. I thought for sure I would see more, and the weather wasn’t that cold.
