We have arrived in cycling’s Nirvana (another one)! Groningen is reputed to be the Netherlands’s most cycle friendly city. With 45,000 University students, there is clearly a reason to ride a bike (poverty).
Read about Days 1 (here), 2 (here), 3 (here), 4 (here), 5 (here), 6 (here), 7 (here) & 8 (here) of our Netherlands cycling adventure.
Helen & I decided to take a train from Leeuwarden as our budgeted cycling time needed to be well utilized. Plus, I did not think the ride to Groningen from Leeuwarden would be all that great.
This city lived up to our expectations – and then some.
It is hard to put into words the way everything just “flows”. Bicycles everywhere. People everywhere (it was a beautiful day). Bikes were here, there & everywhere. And they take priority over everything.
Saturday was a Market day. So people were out in droves.
Let Helen’s pics do the talking.

Nirvana indeed, beautiful pics! Speaking of which: that pillared building at the square…I once hang from one of the chandeliers of a building close to that (to the left)…back when I was a ‘poor’ student and still keen on certain rituals
Those were the days…
See you Thursday!
The picture of all the bikes in the “parking lot” is realy strong!
@Philippe: There are secure biking facilities everywhere in Holland (at every train station). The biggest we saw was in Amsterdam. I’ll be posting more pics of the Netherlands soon. Still working on the jet lag –
@ Marc: Now how come I can picture you hanging from a chandelier?
Cause you got to know me a little better, Les
