I have to admit that we were pooped by the time we arrived in Vlieland. Our cycling on this island was short lived (arrival point near village). Then a search for a suitable hotel (Criteria: bed, shower & adjoining pub).
Read about Days 1 (here), 2 (here), 3 (here), 4 (here), 5 (here) & 6 (here) of our Netherlands cycling adventure.
The morning saw us rising and taking breakfast in the hotel restaurant overlooking the harbor. Our ferry to the mainland was at 11:45. This gave me time time to do some blogging and finally get at least 1 post up (guilt is a powerful emotion). Dutch breakfast, blogging, and then a stroll through the beautiful village.
Trust me when I say that you cannot get lost on Vlieland. The village is on the East end of the island. The rest of the island is sand, dunes and a military firing range (horses too!).
The ferry crossing to Harlingen was beautiful as witnessed by some of Helen’s photos
From there we cycled to Leeuwarden though varied terrain. I’ll say that this was more of a transit trip then anything else. We did see some nice things along the way. But nothing worth making a trip here for.
Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland and a very nice town to visit. Helen and I spent 2 nights here and really enjoyed ourselves (staying in a top notch hotel did help). Our room overlooked the train station and had an outside sitting area – which we took advantage of.
Leeuwarden does have one claim to fame of note. Mata Hari, the famed World War I spy made her home here (go figure). All in all a great place to target for a day’s visit. Helen claims to have eaten the “best pizza ever” – purchased at a tiny hole in the wall restaurant we found in town. That along with a decent bottle of red wine made for a very nice 26th anniversary dinner!
Read comment & enjoy!

Your (fietsers) blog is very enjoyable and it wants me to go there too ! Still, a belated congratulation from us with your wedding aniversary there. Holland would be a very good country for an electric power assisred bike with all the stiff headwinds, eh?
Hoi Douwe —– We are having so much fun in your homeland! Electric power-assisted bikes are indeed here already…..
